Uni Ulm

University of Ulm

The Institute of Energy Conversion focuses its research on the experimental characterisation and modelling of hybrid fuel cell drives in mobile applications on land, at sea and in aviation.

We develop and investigate concepts for hybridisation in the field of complete drive systems and power control. The focus here is on electrical, thermal and mechanical integration as well as power management and control of the overall system, resulting in high efficiency and safety.

We characterise components such as fuel cell systems, batteries and electric motors and develop operating strategies for extreme conditions, such as vacuum and low temperatures for flight applications.

For this purpose, experimental facilities are available at the institute for testing individual components and entire powertrains up to 250 kW in a climate-controlled vacuum chamber.
