RESEARCH FOR A BETTER FUTURE

A sustainable and affordable energy supply and the efficient use of energy are the focus of the current government’s and the institute’s research policy with the aim of completing the energy transition and phasing out the fossil fuel industry. Our own use of on-site wind energy and photovoltaics allows us to operate our main campus with over 100 laboratories, technology and test centres on 20 hectares of land in Pfinztal near Karlsruhe in an increasingly climate-neutral manner. We offer these living laboratories to our customers for research and development activities and support them with the existing know-how within the framework of the transition to an efficient and environmentally friendly energy supply in the most diverse industrial application areas. Within the core competence "Energy and Drive Systems", we research energy storage units for mobile and stationary systems, electrolysis and fuel cells as well as heat and substance-based energy storage systems. We devote ourselves to the functional safety of these systems in our battery and fuel cell test centre and our high-pressure testing area. In addition, we evaluate and validate mobile and stationary as well as thermal energy storage systems. Beyond that, we research drive systems in both electric motor and combustion engine systems and corresponding hybridisation possibilities. We design, construct, simulate and validate these drive systems in tests.
