Sustainable solutions for the optimised use of material properties and for new material functions

Fraunhofer IWM is a research and development partner for industry and public clients in the field of reliability, safety, service life and functionality of components and systems. The material mechanics approach of the Fraunhofer IWM aims to identify weak points and defects in materials and components, to clarify their causes and, based on this, to offer solutions for securing the use of stressed components, for the development of functional materials and for resource-efficient manufacturing processes.

The services regarding hydrogen applications include:

  • Materials testing under the influence of hydrogen (in situ and ex situ / load type: static, cyclic, fracture mechanics / sample shapes: hollow sample, round samples, micro samples, testing in autoclave)
  • Component calculation and service life concepts under hydrogen influence
  • Multiscale simulation (material properties and material-hydrogen interactions; from atomic description to continuum mechanics)
