Transformation towards a sustainable mobility

In the context of increasing interconnectedness, electrification and the emerging closed-loop economy, automobiles and their technologies are being designed, produced and distributed in a completely new way. New, "green" technologies, such as the rapidly developing hydrogen economy, the system integration of electric mobility or city-integrated mobility and logistics processes are among the key building blocks for the transport and energy transition. What does this change mean for companies, society and municipalities?

The teams of the Fraunhofer IAO and the cooperating Institute of Human Factors and Technology Management IAT at the University of Stuttgart are researching answers to this question in cooperation with industrial companies. They develop solutions and methods for generating, designing, introducing, scaling and evaluating product, process and service innovations in the course of the mobility and energy transition.

A Micro Smart Grid was set up at the institute centre to make local renewable energy sources usable for charging electric vehicles and to optimise energy and fleet management in a living lab approach. The Fraunhofer IAO also coordinates and controls the entire charging infrastructure of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft at over 40 facilities. In the Mobility Innovation Lab, prototypes of innovative mobility technologies are built and evaluated to support developers and decision makers in the transition process.
