At the fem Forschungsinstitut Edelmetalle + Metallchemie in Schwäbisch Gmünd, materials and coatings for a wide variety of applications have been researched, developed and tested since 1922. Especially in the field of hydrogen technology, materials and coating systems for electrolysis electrodes, bipolar plates or as diffusion barriers for hydrogen play a decisive role for efficiency, costs and durability of the components. The fem offers industry and SMEs a comprehensive range of services: Application-oriented consulting and support of product development as well as preparation of feasibility studies / implementation and support of research projects from the idea and the application to the successful conclusion / development of components for fuel cells and electrolysis, e.g. electrodes, bipolar plates or electrocatalysts made of precious metals, non-precious metals, non-metals and metal oxides / innovative and diverse manufacturing methods: Electrochemical deposition, electroless deposition, deposition from ionic liquids and aprotic electrolytes, pulse plating, sol-gel, physical and chemical vapour deposition and combination processes / services: Material characterisation, testing in the fuel cell test rig, characteristic determination, hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen diffusion, analysis of the hydrogen content in materials and coatings, ageing effects, causes of damage, post-mortem analysis.
