E-mobility and fuel cell vehicles in waste management

Working for the environment with a dedicated team of over 440 employees, Abfallwirtschaft und Stadtreinigung Freiburg GmbH (ASF) has been Freiburg's waste management and city cleaning company since 2000.

We highly value a sustainable corporate development, which, in addition to the best possible material recycling and a high level of urban cleanliness, also focuses on the environmentally friendly performance of our services.

Our goal: keep Freiburg's roads clean in a climate-neutral manner by 2035. That is why we are gradually converting our entire vehicle fleet to alternative drive systems. Starting with the commissioning of Germany’s first electrically powered street sweeper in 2017, the number of electric vehicles in the city cleaning department was increased to 35 by 2023.

While the switch to alternative drive systems in the city cleaning department relies on battery-electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles are used for waste collection. Since the purchase of the first two fuel cell vehicles in 2021, the number has been increased to 9 hydrogen-powered waste collection vehicles by mid-2023. This means that 41 per cent of the municipal vehicle fleet for waste collection is powered by alternative drives systems — a rate that puts Freiburg in first place in a nationwide comparison of waste disposal companies.
