Institute for Electric Mobility at Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences

The Institute for Electric Mobility (IEM) at Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences was founded in the summer of 2019. The founding members and directors of the Institute for Electric Mobility are Prof. Dr.-Ing. Benedikt Reick (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) and Prof. Dr. André Kaufmann (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering). The close cooperation between the faculties of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering enables work on interdisciplinary projects in the field of electric mobility.

The institute boasts a modern laboratory. Test benches for electrical machines as well as cooling systems, hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) systems and state-of-the-art measurement technology can be found on around 400 m².

The IEM's research focuses on battery systems, cooling electrical components, micro-mobility vehicles (mostly low-voltage) and high-voltage vehicles. In addition to a test bench for electrical machines, the institute has test benches for testing the cooling performance of water cooling systems. In the field of battery system technology, the IEM has battery emulators as well as the ability to build its own batteries and measure them at cell level and battery level (up to 150 kW). In addition to its own laboratory, the IEM also has access to the automotive laboratory and the chassis dynamometer MAHA MSR 500 available there. In combination with a power measuring device, this chassis dynamometer can be used for efficiency and performance measurements on electric vehicles.
